it just basically works by breaking a file down into lots nad lots of tiny pieces and sharing whatever you've downloaded already with others (uploading) while you donwload new pieces of the file. it shares the load and the more people that have their windows open, the faster up/down everyone will be ... i hope that helped, i know how it works, but can't really put it out in words well. hopefully others can anunciate it better.

It varies- depending on your system *and* on other people involved. There's a lot of info in various FAQs and descriptions, and also a lot of tips and stuff posted in http://forums.etree.org and other places, so I recommend checking out those resources.
